MIDI Controller for Capture One!

Phase One has announced the 10th version of their highly appreciated post-processing software with many new features. Among these Capture One Pro 10 finally supports hardware least with almost the most expensive controller on the market, which is called Tangent. Tangent controllers are originally designed for video post-production (color grading) unlike the standard MIDI controllers we use for Lightroom that are originally aimed to music makers. Please note that Tangent's three trackballs solution is ideal for Capture One's new Color Balance tool...or vice versa: we can say that the new Color Balance tool has been designe for trackball-controller use...intentionally. I think this is a big step in the newborn world of hardware-based photo-processing: one of the biggest software makers in our industry adjusts its tool for a hardware controller.

According to our source Tangent for Phase One is a pilot project at the moment, so Phase One wants to see if it will be a successful and needed solution or not. Anyway it is a good to know that there is a relatively cheaper compromise too (Tangent has a fully functional and compatible tablet app) so from now on tactile controlling of Capture One is accessible for the masses.

Although Tangent controllers are unfortunately very expensive ones. While standard MIDI controllers for Lightroom usually cost 100-500 dollars, a Tangent set pictured above costs around 3300 bucks. Tangent has a couple of product lines where the Ripple (see picture below) is the cheapest one (USD 350.00) and includes only three track-balls, three dials and some customizeable buttons. A more serious one is the Element line (see picture above) which has modular panels with trackballs, encoders and/or buttons. Every panel has a small status-LCD on the top. These panels cost 600-1100 dollars per each.

In order to pair Tangent controllers with Capture One 10 you'll need the Tangent Mapper app. So you also can customize the dials, balls, knobs and buttons.

However there is a cheaper solution with some compromise. Tangent offers virtual controller panels for your iPad or Andorid tablet. The Element-VS app is free to try (free version is fully functional but works only 1 hour per day, unlimited version costs 100 dollars) and is fully compatible with Capture One. So with Tangent Element-VS your tablet will be your controller...not as convenient as a hardware controller but may be better than using your mouse.

Using a MIDI controller for photo processing is quite a new movement in the world. These hardwares are originally built for music editing softwares but thanks to some clever plugins they can be used for photo editing in Adobe’s Lightroom software too. READ MORE...

We need a small plugin to connect a MIDI controller with Lightroom. The job of these plugins is to identify the signal of the MIDI controller via USB and match them to certain Lightroom prompts and functions which are in the plugin’s stock. READ MORE...
